Nuts were long thought to be a no-no for a fit figure, but now we know that nuts are essential for a lean body. Yes, they are full of fat and calories, but that’s not a bad thing. Your body needs fat and calories from a healthy source in order to lose weight and build muscle.

Additionally nuts will help your blood sugar to stabilize, which equals feeling full and ultimately controlling your appetite.

While most nuts contain similar amounts of fat, not all are ideal for fitness nuts. Here are some of the best nuts to add your diet if you lead an active lifestyle:

Almonds

It’s been long known that almonds are a heart healthy snack. Their high fiber and low carb count make them that much more appealing for a healthy diet. They are also high in polyunsaturated fats and vitamin E which is good for your eyes and skin.

Cashews

The high, yet healthy fat content found in cashews helps to fight of diabetes and heart disease while the high levels of copper and magnesium help your body to function at optimal levels.

Macadamia Nuts

There is quite a lot of debate about the health benefits of macadamia nuts as they contain lower amounts of protein and higher amounts of fats when compared to other nuts. But they also contain the most omega-3 to omega-6 ration of any nut which are heart healthy fats. The trick to incorporating these rich treats into your diet is portion control! So long as you’re not eating more than a small handful a day, these are a great choice of nuts to fuel an active lifestyle.

Pecans

Like the macadamia nut, pecans are a nut that bring up debate in terms of health benefits. They too contain higher amounts of fat and lower amounts of protein than other nuts. But they are packed with fiber, which make you feel full and satisfied, as well as being high in vitamin A, calcium, antioxidants and other minerals such as phytoserols, which help overall body functionality. Again like the macadamia nut, the key here is portion control.

Pistachios

Pistachios contain the least amount of fat from all nuts and are loaded with minerals such as copper, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus and potassium. These minerals are essential to control blood sugar levels. When your blood sugar is under control your appetite is easily satisfied

Walnuts

Another heart healthy nut, walnuts contain large amounts of omega-3 fatty acids, polyunsaturated fats and are full of antioxidants. These little powerhouses reduce the risk of heart disease, diabetes, cancer, stroke, obesity and depression.
